Projects – American Flower Corp

American Flower Was Founded In 1965 By Mr. Mike Thomas in order to grow gladiolus bulbs to ship to the US. A few years after its founding, the company expanded to produce chrysanthemums, which also targeted the US market. In 1971 the demand for flowers and prices fell sharply due to oversupply, so the company suffered an acute lack of liquidity.

At this time, LAAD representatives met with Mr. Thomas and offered help to cope with the market cycle by providing funds to overcome the lack of liquidity and funding diversification and expansion of the company so that it could in future better tolerate market fluctuations.

Over the next three decades, and with LAAD's help, annual sales of the company grew from $300,000 in 1971 to over 8 million in 2001. More recently, the floral industry has undergone drastic changes and companies must continue to diversify and consolidate to remain competitive. Once again, American Flower turned to LAAD to fund a transition to diversification and remain competitive.
